A graduate of the Faculty of Marine Sciences, KAU, Prof. Alaa Albarakati got his Ph.D. from U.K. and his thesis is related to “Modeling of the Red Sea circulation”. His present interest covers a range of topics which include balance of heat at the air-sea interface, hydrography, currents in coastal areas, formation of seasonal thermocline, hydrodynamic models of the Red Sea and Arabian Gulf. He participated in several scientific cruises in the Red Sea.
Prof. Albarakati developed a 3-D hydrodynamic model for the Red Sea, which was published in 2001. Also, he published scientific articles regarding the physical prosperities and flushing time of the lagoons along the Red Sea. He also played an important role in Jeddah Transect project which is joint scientific research between KAU and IFM-GEOMAR to investigate the microstructure of temperature variation in Atlantis II Deep.
He is member of several scientific boards such as editorial board of KAU Journal, the scientific board of Maritime Disaster Management, Saudi Border Guards and was a board member of the Saudi General Commission for Survey. In 2011 he received a reward for High Achieving Academics in KAU. In 2022 became a member of the Permanent Committee for Academic Promotions in KAU.
